In 2015 Virgin Australia achieved external certification to Australian/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS) 4801 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. Since 2013 Virgin Australia has published an annual Sustainability Report under the Global Reporting Initiative and this report includes a number of health and safety performance metrics. Virgin Australia has a strong commitment to becoming a more sustainable business and working towards our vision of sustainability leadership within the aviation industry. Targets are set on an annual basis and regularly monitored at management and executive level. Health and safety performance is managed and reported across a range of occupational health and safety indicators in various areas of Virgin Australia. Virgin Australia is audited every two years against a global standard, by an accredited IATA Operations Safety Audit (IOSA) Audit Organisation. The SMS continually monitors our operations to ensure they exceed Civil Aviation Safety Authority standards and international safety regulators. We control and reduce operational safety risk through our Safety Management System (SMS). Virgin Australia manages safety through proactive and systematic identification of risk. To continuously improve its performance, the Board established a Safety and Operational Risk Review Committee as an efficient mechanism for focusing attention on this area. The Virgin Australia Board has always recognised the importance of, and had ultimate responsibility for, safety and operational risk oversight and management.
